About Us

Inside Kentucky Basketball was launched before the 2026-27 season to bring UK fans a local, independent and objective source of news and analysis on the Cats that readers won't find anywhere else, combining reporting, insight and institutional knowledge of the program and the people in and around it.

Ben Roberts has covered the University of Kentucky men's basketball team for more than 20 years. He was the UK beat writer for the Lexington Herald-Leader from 2022-2026, earning multiple national awards and more than a dozen Kentucky Press Association honors for his work covering the Wildcats during that time. Before that, he created and maintained the Next Cats blog while spending more than a decade as the Herald-Leader's UK basketball recruiting writer and assisting with coverage of the team. Ben was also the team's beat writer for the Kentucky Kernel and spent two years as a sports copy editor for Stars and Stripes.

John Clay is a contributing columnist for Inside Kentucky Basketball. He spent more than 40 years at the Lexington Herald-Leader, retiring in 2025 as the newspaper's senior sports columnist. John is a member of the U.S. Basketball Writers' Association Hall of Fame, the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame and one of the most decorated sports journalists in the history of the commonwealth.

Derek Terry is a contributing writer for Inside Kentucky Basketball. He covered Kentucky basketball for seven seasons at Cats Illustrated and The Cats' Pause before leaving full-time sportswriting in 2022. In 2024, he founded Bat Cats Central, an independent website covering the University of Kentucky baseball program.
