Mark Pope has been one of the most successful college basketball coaches in the country with the transfer portal since his arrival at Kentucky in 2024, but he's still trying to establish himself as a force on the high school recruiting trail.

Pope's pursuit of No. 1-ranked prospect Tyran Stokes, who ultimately signed with Kansas for the 2026-27 season, defined UK's last recruiting cycle, but the Wildcats' coaching staff is looking for better results moving forward.

Kentucky's 2027 recruiting efforts got off to a good start with a commitment from highly touted wing Ryan Hampton, and Pope will be looking to add more impact players as this cycle continues.

Background

Ryan Hampton became Mark Pope’s highest-ranked prep commitment when he chose the Wildcats while on a visit in June. Ranked No. 6 nationally at the time, Hampton slid down the rankings following an up-and-down summer on the Nike EYBL circuit and is currently ranked No. 21 by 247Sports.

Hampton showcased his scoring ability, averaging 20.5 points across four regular season sessions, first with LivOn in sessions I and II before switching to Nightdryas for the rest of the spring and summer. The 6-foot-6 wing shot 38% from the floor, but only 22% from 3-point range, though he made nearly 80% of his free throws. Hampton had more turnovers (25) than assists (19) through 15 regular season games. He started strong at Peach Jam, posting 17 points in Nightdryas' first game, then followed it with 21 points and eight rebounds in a losing effort. But Hampton struggled down the stretch despite Nightdryas reaching the Peach Jam Finals. He went 2-11 from the floor in a 55-54 win in the semifinals, then was a non-factor in the finals. Hampton was held to four points on 2-6 shooting with four turnovers.

Hampton announced in August that he'll be returning to Rockwall-Heath in Texas for his final year of high school. He played for DME Academy in Florida as a junior.

Scouts view Hampton as a promising prospect who can be a creative scorer, but he'll need to continue rounding out his game to reach his potential.

"Hampton’s ability to be the best version of himself will not come down to tools or counting stats, but his ability to impact winning. Right now, his approach and decision-making don’t always do that. So, while he will undoubtedly want to get stronger, improve his shooting, and passing, most important will be his understanding of how to operate and be efficient in structure when he’s sharing the ball with other talented players," wrote Adam Finkelstein, Director of Scouting at 247Sports.com.
